about

Inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry and of identical size (350,000 sq cm), The Coviad (a twist on Homer’s ‘The Iliad’) is a grand frieze-like series of drawings that recounts the unfolding story of Covid through the eyes of sculptor/painter David Breuer-Weil whose monumental sculptures have appeared throughout London and the UK.

Entirely hand-drawn during the various UK lockdowns in 2021and using the distinctive medium of pencil and gold leaf, The Coviad depicts the chronological pandemic narrative through mythological and surrealist symbolism. 70 drawings, grouped in nine sections, and set up as a continuous flow of images containing thousands of significant details, it is one of the largest drawings ever made.

Shortly after the completion of The Coviad, composer Daniel Biro was inspired by the magical intensity of Breuer-Weil's work to create a shimmering, immersive and sometimes ominous ambient electronic composition. Biro decided to limit his sound-palette to manly one synthesiser: the Moog Matriarch, and to create layers of electronic details in the tradition of 70’s synth pioneers like Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream, etc. Finished in January 2022, the work is divided in nine sections, one for each section of The Coviad, but recorded as a continuous, hour-long instrumental.

The Coviad includes many iconic symbols of the last two years including the mysterious origins and spread of the pandemic, the ban on travel, lockdowns, isolation bubbles, the resilience of the populations, the loss of life, the reconnection with nature and family, the arrival of vaccines as a form of salvation. Parallel historical events, like the George Floyd story and its consequences, are also charted. Everyone has their own personal experience of the Covid pandemic and this combination of drawings/music is an attempt to translate the past events into a highly original and unique collaborative work of art.
